Camiguin island in Mindanao. Any suggestions? comments?

We might be going to Cagayan de Oro City for whitewater rafting and visit Camiguin island. Any suggestions for accommodations, spots, best time to go there? Comments on safety, transportation, people, night life, etc... Thanks

As mentioned you can try Paras Beach Resort but it does not really have a shoreline to walk on. You can also try Secret Cove which is near the famed White Island. There are also accommodations in the main town of Mambajao.

Best spots? You should first visit White Island, north of Camiguin. Not going to White Island is like not going to Camiguin at all. It is also the best spot to take a scenic picture of Camiguin and Hibok-Hibok Volcano as your background. There is also a Sunken Cemetery, which sunk during a volcanic eruption in the late 19th century. There are ancestral houses, Spanish Church ruins, hot and cold springs, and waterfalls. In fact Ferdinand Magellan visited the island before going to Cebu in 1521.

Best time to go there? If you want tourists around, during the Holy Week is the best time to go there. Most people especially here in Cagayan de Oro go there for the yearly "Panaad" in which people trek to the mountain side for the Way of the Cross.

Safety? Camiguin Island-Province quite safe. Unfortunately tourists tend to skip it because it is located in Mindanao (Northern Mindanao). It does not mean that it is safe you can just leave your doors open or wave your money out in the open. Use your common sense. People there are friendly and are quite laid back.

Transportation? Since you will be in Cagayan de Oro you just take a bus going to Balingoan town (86 kilometers east) and take a ferry going to the island. Ferry services is frequent. There are no taxi's in the island as it is quite rural. There are jeepneys and locally made tricycles called motorela. These are also found in Cagayan de Oro.

Since it is a rural island, do not expect much night life. You go there for some peace and quite.

Ciao! So you're really going to those places eh? LOL!

For accomodations if you're on budget. There's a lot of pension houses at Mambajao (I guess their town center) but the most known resort is Paras Beach Resort which is a bit expensive but I think they are the only resort in town who accepts credit card. I suggest you rent a motorbike if you want to travel to their famous tourist spots like:

Safety %26amp; People:

The people are friendly %26amp; hospitable. I can say the island is safe from common crimes but to make it sure just follow some of the travellers safety guidelines. The only decent restaurant I've been in that Island is the "Kan-anan sa Parola." they have nice choices of foods and very affordable. Nightlife? They don't really have nightlife like you have in cities. The island is already silent at 8 in the evening. I guess the locals went to sleep too early. LOL!

So I suggest you go to Ardent Hot Spring at night time. Just perfect for couples. If you want to more just try to email me. I'll be very glad to share with you my ideas at Camiguin Island.

been there a few weeks ago and stayed at PARAS resort ....it is nice has great view of white island that u go catch an outriger to for breakfast ..has a nice pool bar pool tables ...

and when i was there a few weeks ago it was not too many ppl there so it was a nice relazing period in between the other places i went to in PHP

I hired a bike and rode around the island for a couple of days stopping and chatting to any one along the way ..all very friendly and helpful

i payed 500 pesos for 24hours for the bike ...not sure if i got ripped off with that price but it didnt matter as 500 p is only like15 AUD so it was a brgin to me ....

oh and remeber to at least take a helemt WITH u no one seems to wear them but when u come along the road and the police have a road block they will fine u if u not wearing one ..hhehehehehe cost me 150 pesos ....duh
